A childhood friend of Rob’s from Cambridge happened to be in New York over Rob’s birthday. So we invited him out to celebrate with us. (Sorry, I have no photos of John!) It was a wonderful boost to have a little bit of England with us, and Rob thoroughly enjoyed having someone around who knew him way back when.
We celebrated at Fratello’s, our favorite pizza place. (Sophie is with us. She is sound asleep between me and Elliot!)
John’s wife, Ellen, spent the fall term in New York as a Fulbright Scholar. She’s Irish, and just lovely. I wish we’d had more time to get to know her while she was here.
We went into the city for the day to see them.
We headed to Greenwich for lunch at a place we’ve been wanting to get to for 5 years.
Real English fish and chips!
It was amazing. Next door was Tea & Sympathy, full of English chocolate and other goodies. And there were actual English shopkeepers and customers to talk to!! It significantly eased Rob’s homesickness, and was a wonderful way to complete his birthday weekend!
